Sunday, June 20th the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers will determine who gets to move onto the Eastern Conference Finals to face the Milwaukee Bucks.

It’s fitting this semi-final will require seven games to decide the victor with both teams equally dealing with the ups and downs of a well-matched opponent.

Many felt the 76ers would dispense of the Hawks much sooner given their youth and inexperience and perhaps if Joel Embiid was at full health that might’ve been the case.

‘Likewise, the depth of the Hawks has been a factor as has the grit of this team who has taken on the identity of their coach.

Atlanta Hawks

Two games in a row the scrappy Hawks erased significant double-digit deficits to collect victories but in Game 6 after getting out to their own 12 point lead weren’t able to hang on.

Trae Young continued to lead the way embracing the moment scoring 34 points but needed 30 shots. Young added 12 dimes registering one of three Hawks double-doubles.

The others came from Clint Capela (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Kevin Huerter (17 points, 11 rebounds). Danilo Gallinari offered 16 points off the bench as the other double-figure scorer.

Bogdan Bogdanovic began the series averaging 19 points per game but in the last two scored six and seven points respectively shooting a cumulative 6 for 20. He took a hard hit in Game 6 that sent him from the game but it likely had more to do with his ailing knee.

He’s listed as questionable and if he can’t go someone will need to step up in his absence.

Philadelphia 76ers

While Trae Young often cites Stephen Curry as an inspiration it was his younger brother Seth who put on the shooting display Friday. Curry hit six of his nine 3-point attempts and led Philly’s scoring with 24 points.

In the series, Curry is averaging 21.8 points shooting 59.6% from deep on 7.8 attempts per game. Tobias Harris bounced back from a four-point effort to also score 24 points.

After fading down the stretch of the prior two contests, Doc Rivers managed Joel Embiid’s minute distribution better and he benefitted showing more lift at game end. He finished with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Ben Simmons is suffering from a lack of confidence. His lack of aggression offensively seems to have a direct correlation to not wanting to have to shoot free throws. He took only six shots and more telling was his team-worst minus -7.

Each 76ers win has featured an x-factor stepping up. Shake Milton, Furkan Korkmaz and in Game 6 it was Tyrese Maxey who scored 16 off the bench.

Much like Terance Mann of the Clippers, the youngster isn’t afraid of the spotlight and perhaps could replicate his production in the friendlier confines of Wells Fargo.

NBA Betting Trends:

  • The 76ers are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
  • The 76ers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
  • Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:

With both teams staging big come from behind victories it almost feels like the team trailing at the half will have the advantage and I’m only half-joking.

Seriously though, two seasons ago a young 76ers squad watched an improbable Kawhi Leonard shot bounce on the rim four times and fall in dashing their title hopes. Embiid left the court in tears. The core of Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris will also have that memory fresh in their minds.

Conversely, the Hawks are new to this experience, and although Young loves the big game moments they needed to take care of business in Atlanta and not test their luck in Philly.
