BetMGM’s sportsbook app at Nationals Park is now available. The launch continues the trend of sportsbooks opening their doors to Washington, D.C., quickly following William Hill’s sportsbook go-live at Capital One Arena.
Bet Within Two Blocks Of Nationals Park
Sports bettors looking to place a wager can do so by downloading the BetMGM app and creating an account. Once you’re set up (and after you’ve claimed a bonus), you can bet within Nationals Parks or in a two-block radius surrounding the arena.
Washington, D.C.’s sports betting regulations allow venues to offer sports betting via partnerships like the one between BetMGM and the Nationals. Unlike other nearby states (New Jersey or West Virginia, for example), D.C. bettors have to be within a very specific location in order to place a bet. In other words, you can’t just wager form anywhere within Washington, D.C.; you must be in or near an approved operator’s partnered venue.
William Hill’s sportsbook is subject to the same rules, allowing bettors to place online wagers within a few clocks of Capital One Arena.
But There’s A (Good) Catch
Washington D.C.’s geofencing rules only apply to actually placing wagers. You can access the app, view betting lines, and otherwise browse sports betting options from anywhere in D.C. Once you’re ready to place a bet, though, you must be within the approved area, which will be confirmed using your phone or mobile device’s GPS functionality.
Retail Sportsbook Planned
While online sports betting is on the rise, retail sportsbooks are proliferating in legal markets, too. D.C. is no different, and BetMGM has plans to open a physical sportsbook in Nationals Park. Details are sparse at the moment, but as Covid-19 restrictions lift and quarantines end, bettors will flock to sporting venues seeking new opportunities to get in on the sports betting boom.
