Saturday, April 9th, the Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers play for the third and final occasion of this season. The teams split the two prior meetings with the Pacers winning the initial match 118-113 on November 13th while Philly took the game on Tuesday 131-122.

The Pacers have been off since that match Tuesday while the 76ers played on Thursday in Toronto losing 114-119 to a team they may face in the first round of the postseason.

Both teams are finishing their regular-season slate playing a back-to-back set with the Pacers finishing in Brooklyn while the 76ers will host the Pistons.

Last season, the teams played three times with the 76ers taking two of the three contests. The 76ers hold the all-time record having bested the Pacers in 104 of their 188 matches

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers have lost eight straight with the fifth-worst record a game up on the Thunder and two back of the Blazers so there is some incentive to lose their final two games and hope they drop down further to increase their lottery odds.

In the Tuesday loss, Buddy Hield led with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Seven Pacers scored in double-figures including Tyrese Haliburton (21), Jalen Smith (19), Isaiah Jackson (16), Terry Taylor (13), Duane Washington Jr. (12), and Lance Stephenson (10).

Rookie Chris Duarte who started the season strong has also missed a ton of games as has veteran Malcolm Brogdon and given the struggles when Haliburton and Brogdon are on the court together it sets up a possible offseason trade of the veteran point guard.

Jalen Smith (illness) and Goga Bitadze are questionable while Brogdon (conditioning) is doubtful for Saturday.

Chris Duarte (toe), Myles Turner (foot), and T.J. McConnell (wrist) are all out indefinitely. TJ Warren (foot) and Ricky Rubio (ACL) are lost for the season.

Philadelphia 76ers

There is a slow simmer occurring in Philly that could become a full-out firestorm. After the honeymoon period following the trade for James Harden, the team has struggled with the Beard having trouble delivering in critical matches.

Joel Embiid has produced one of the three best season performances putting him in line to win MVP but his new running mate hasn’t come close to measuring up to the level Daryl Morey anticipated when he traded away the Sixers’ depth to acquire him.

That point was driven home on Thursday when the Raptors were missing two of their top three players (Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby) but still defeated Philly.

Embiid had a solid effort per usual (30 points, 10 rebounds) with his squad winning the minutes he was on the court, but Harden shot 3 of 12 and again, that was without two Raptors who would typically guard him being available.

That’s a problem, especially since the 76ers are currently in line to play the Raptors in the first round and will have all the pressure on them to win the series.

In contrast, the Raptors can play freely already overachieving on a season where most analysts doubted they’d make the play-in let alone be a cemented playoff seed.

Georges Niang (knee) and Charles Bassey (shoulder) were both downgraded to out on Saturday versus the Pacers.

Free Indiana Pacers vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:

As noted the Pacers’ situation is pretty straightforward, – they have reason to lose but could play the role of spoiler since they aren’t likely to change positions.

Conversely, the 76ers situation is more convoluted. If they lose both games and the Raptors beat the Knicks they would drop to fifth because Toronto won the tiebreak.

Philly can still finish third but needs help. They would have to win out because the Celtics have the Divisional record tiebreak so they would need Boston to lose on Sunday to keep this option in play.

Suffice to say, Philly is in must-win territory for these last two games — let’s see how Harden responds.
