Verizon Furthers 5G Deployment at NBA, NHL Venues

By Andrew Cohen May 21, 2021

Verizon has been named the official 5G partner of 15 NBA teams, bringing the total number of sports venues enabled with Verizon 5G to more than 60.

Verizon also announced that the NHL’s New Jersey Devils recently tested a 5G-powered activation at the Prudential Center in partnership with augmented reality app ARISE. Testers were able to point their phones at players on the ice to see their screen show real-time speed, time on ice and historical stats of that player through data derived from the NHL’s in-venue player tracking system.

The 15 NBA teams to deploy Verizon 5G into their home arenas include the Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzles, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, and Philadelphia 76ers.

The Verizon 5G Performance Center in Arizona, which is the practice facility for the Suns, has installed ShotTracker, a shooting analytics system that received investment from Verizon in January. With the speed of 5G computing, Verizon envisions game data from ShotTracker being delivered in real-time to coaches, broadcasters, and fans using smartphones inside arenas.

The goal is to compute such metrics as expected feld goal percentage in real-time, as the player is taking the shot. The system would process on Verizon 5G Edge and AWS Wavelength and use such data as career shooting rate from that location on the court in similar game situations.
