GAINESVILLE, Fla. — As the Florida football staff focuses its efforts heavily on recruiting and closing the gap between SEC rival Georgia on paper in terms of talent, the current players and the strength and conditioning staff are working to prepare ahead of what could be a pivotal year for the program as it heads into its fourth season under coach Dan Mullen.
The Gators finally flipped the script in the SEC East after three seasons of Bulldogs dominance, winning the division to represent in Atlanta in the SEC title game.
But if Mullen and company want to prove they’re here to stay, winning it again in 2021 despite having a significant roster overhaul, all while Georgia returns a veteran quarterback and a boatload of talent on both sides of the ball would sure be a statement in that regard.
For now, most sportsbooks view Georgia as the definitive favorite in the SEC East.
The conference win totals for the 2021 season were released by the South Point sportsbook in Las Vegas on Monday, and Vegas view Florida like many other analysts and prognosticators this offseason: still a contender but not the favorite in the SEC East.
South Point gives Florida an over/under of 5.5 wins in SEC play this fall, with an over of -120 and an under set at even, meaning you’ll bet $100 to win $100 if the under hits, while you’d have to risk $120 to make $100 on a bet the over hits. So Vegas sees Florida more likely to hit six conference wins than just five, but not by a whole lot from a risk/reward standpoint.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s win total was set at 7.0 games, with a +110 line on the over and a -130 line on the under, meaning you’ll get a better payout to bet on Georgia hitting the over (in other words, it’s viewed as a riskier bet than the under). While Georgia’s schedule features Clemson in the season opener, it doesn’t feature much firepower from the SEC West. The Bulldogs take on Arkansas (win total set at 2.5 in SEC play) and Auburn (win total set at 3.5 in SEC play).
Bottom line: Georgia has a much easier path through SEC play than Florida, which makes the annual showdown in Jacksonville all the more important. Theoretically, a loss there will likely be tougher to overcome for the Gators, who have the Crimson Tide on this year’s schedule, than the Bulldogs.
In any case, you can view the over/under win totals from South Point sportsbook in Las Vegas below.
